A journey from the gravinas to the sea
Puglia - Terra delle Gravine by UTMB takes place in the wonderful scenery of the Gravine, deep natural incisions in the earth's crust that rival Europe's most spectacular canyons.
The event crosses six villages that tell six thousand years of history: the splendid Matera, with its "Sassi," a UNESCO heritage site; Ginosa, suspended over the void of its ravine; Laterza, home to the longest ravine in Europe; Castellaneta, birthplace of silent film legend Rudolph Valentino; and finally Castellaneta Marina, where the red earth of the Murgia meets the waters of the Ionian Sea.
This isn't just a race route. It's a crossing through time, along the traces of those who inhabited this land long before us.
From the Gravine to the sea, athletes take an immersive journey through the scents of Mediterranean scrub and centuries-old olive trees, along ancient paths once walked by shepherds and pilgrims, passing the Gravine with their hypogea and rock churches, silent witnesses to the first human settlements in this land.
From the Murgia to the sea, on highly technical trails that will test every muscle, a continuous up and down leads athletes to the mouth of the Lato river. The final kilometers are run between the sea and the golden sand of Castellaneta Marina, with October's warm light and the scent of the Mediterranean framing the finish line.
